Heat sources, holiday decorations, winter storms and candles all add up to an increased risk of home fires during the winter months. More chilling (pardon the pun) is that modern American homes burn faster today than 30 years ago, giving occupants only three to four minutes, on average, to escape unharmed. You should know how to put a freeze on winter blazes and protect your family from home fires throughout the year.

Most Americans think they’ll have five to 10 minutes to escape a burning house. Three minutes or less, say the experts.
